UPFA Parliamentarians Namal Rajapaksa, DV Chanaka, Provincial Councilor Sampath Atukorala and five others arrested and remanded in connection with the protest in Hambantota, have been granted bail.
Meanwhile MP Prasanna Ranaweera, PC members Upali Kodikara,
Major (retires) Ajith Prasanna and 29 other protesters have been further remanded October 30.
The arrested suspects were produced before the Hambantota Magistrate this morning, when the case was taken up today (16).
Namal Rajapaksa, DV Chanaka, Prasanna Ranaweera, PC members Upali Kodikara, Sampath Atukorala and Ajith Prasanna were arrested on October 10 on charges of unlawful assembly, causing damage to public property, injuring police officers, obstructing their duty and violating a court order.
Twenty-eight protesters were arrested and remanded following the tense situation during the Joint Opposition-organised protest opposite the Indian Consulate in Hambantota on October 6.
Police had used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the individuals engaged in the protest, against the agreement to handover operations of the Hambantota port and Mattala airport to two foreign companies.
