Won’t support no-faith motion against Wijedasa - MR

Ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa rules out supporting a no-confidence motion which the UNP is said to be planning to move against justice minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe.

Responding to questions raised by journalists following a function in Minuwangoda, Rajapaksa said the minister was from his own village.

A group of UNPers, led by minister Rajitha Senaratne, is to bring in the no-confidence motion
against Rajapakshe, accusing him of having violated the collective responsibility of the cabinet.

UNP backbenchers also accuse the justice minister of delaying the prosecution of the Rajapaksas over fraud and corruption charges and getting the Attorney General’s Department to inconvenience former minister Ravi Karunanayake.

They have informed prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that a website run by a son of Rajapakshe was attacking UNP ministers, including a scathing attack on Karunanayake recently.

They demanded the immediate removal of the minister, also accusing him of inconveniencing the government due to a promise he has been given by the joint opposition to make him the common candidate at a future presidential election.
