‘Luck has abandoned us’ - Tharanga

Spectators gave tremendous support in Dambulla although the first match was lost, says one-day skipper Upul Tharanga.

Speaking to the media yesterday (23) at Pallekele ahead of the second game, he said he expected the same level of spectator support at the remaining games too.

The team always wanted to win matches, he said.

Commenting on Sri Lanka’s having to depend on the outcome of the series against India for
qualification for the 2019 World Cup, Tharanga said that they took each game on its merit without planning for the entire future.

But, all the players know that they have to win at least two matches to qualify, he said.

However, things are not working for the team, and luck too, has abandoned us, said the skipper.

He noted that Lasith Malinga was back in the team after around 20 months and that his performance has declined.

However, his presence is important for the young pacemen in the team, said Tharanga.
