Schoolmates Akalanka, Himashani set up new records

Two Ambagamuwa MMV athletes K.L.A Akalanka and U.M.S Himashani set up meet records at the 91st Sir John Tarbet senior athletic meet which is now in progress at Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo.

Akalanka set up an Under 18 boys’ 400 m Hurdles record with 52.3 seconds while Himashani put up a superb performance at the girls under 16 hurdles event to establish a new meet record with 1 minute 05.3 seconds.
The veteran coach Anura Bandara coached both Akalanka and Himashani while Akalanka came to the fore earlier and performed well to clinch the silver medal at the recently concluded Commonwealth Youth Games held in Trinidad and Tobago. On the first day (Wednesday), T. Mendis of Lyceum International School Wattala set up the under 16 boys’ high jump new meet record with a leap of 2.00 m while Kahawatte Central College K.M Yasiru set up boys’ under 20 new meet record with 16.19 m.

The meet will be continued today (15) for the third day. Nilupul de Silva General Manager Marketing CBL Foods International Pvt makers of Ritzbury will be the chief guest and Dr Kusala Fernando the President of the Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association and Education Department Sports Director Upali Amarathunga will participate at the closing ceremony on September 16.
