20th amendment to Parliament on 22

It is reported that the vote on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution will be taken separately from clause to clause at the Parliamentary Committee stage.

According to internal parliamentary sources, those who have alternative views on the constitutional amendment can submit and pass the amendments at that stage.

Ministers Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila have put forward alternative views to certain clauses when the amendment was discussed at the last Cabinet meeting.

However, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has strongly stated that since he had promised the people at the Presidential Election that the 19th Amendment would be repealed , it should be repealed firstand a new constitution should be drafted .

The President has said that if amendments are to be made, they will be considered at the committee stage.

Accordingly, necessary arrangements are being made to present the 20th Amendment  to Parliament on September 22.

The government plans to pass the 20th Amendment before November 04.
