Over 20,000 importers stranded due to import limitations

The government's decision to restrict imports has caused 21,064 importers and 4,500 wharf agencies to be severely inconvenienced.

The government has temporarily suspended the importation of number of products including plastics items, sports equipment and vehicles.


As a result, it is said that over one million people who are involved in direct and indirect activities related to the importation of these goods have been inconvenienced.

Media Director of the Customs Department, Sunil Jayaratne has told the media that imports have been restricted to control the value of the rupee and the situation is being discussed.

He said that the importers' association has now requested to relax the decision to limit imports.
