Complaints to UNP about Fonseka who collected Sajith’s campaign money

The UNP is said to be receiving many complaints regarding a certain person named Fonseka who had been collecting money during the election period claiming it is for presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa’s election campaign.

Many businessmen had contributed monetarily towards this fund, but this Fonseka had not even acknowledged their contributions nor sent them a thank you letter.

The normal procedure within the UNP is that when they receive such funds, the party sends the person a letter of appreciation thanking them for their contribution.

This person had worked directly at the Vauxhall Street election office and has been found to be someone who had worked closely with Sajith Premadasa.

Attanayake’s role

Meanwhile, after the defeat of Premadasa, Attanayake had issued a letter stating that Imthiaz Bakeer Marker and himself had voluntarily engaged in Sajith Premadasa’s election campaign coordination as per Premadasa’s request.

Further, during several rounds of talks between the party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and the presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa, all election operations had been entrusted to Malik Samarawickreme, Chairman of the party Kabir Hashim and party General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.

However, Attanayake states in his letter that in the event there had been any shortcoming during Sajith Premadasa’s election campaign, he is willing to take full responsibility.

Debt of 90 million

Further, the UNP is said to have incurred a loss of around Rs. 900 million during the New Democratic Front Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa’s election campaign and is in a dire predicament being unable to pay off this amount.

However, despite several attempts to contact the UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam over the telephone for a clarification on this issue, our efforts proved futile.
