Prez polls to cost over 4.5 bil - EC

The estimated cost of the Presidential election will exceed Rs 4.5 billion, says the Chairman of Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya.

According to the Elections Commissioner in history of Presidential elections in Sri Lanka this is the election with most number of candidates, which has caused the increase in cost.


He made these comments during the press briefing held today (04 October) at National Elections Commission in Rajagiriya.

He further stated that the process of accepting postal voting applications for Presidential elections ends with effect from today.

He also said that they had requested from all the Presidential candidates representing all political parties to voluntarily take steps to remove the posters and cutouts adding that if it is not done, it could be considered a punishable offense.

Deshapriya stated that from this evening onwards that all cutouts and banners in police stations, state institutions, and other public places will be removed in the area covering from Borella junction to the Diyatha Uyana.

He further stated that with the assistance of Sri Lanka Police all cut-outs and banners will be removed from public places, after the conclusions of the acceptance of nominations on Monday (07 October).
He further noted all candidates who submit nominations were requested to submit a declaration of assets and liabilities along with their nominations to which the candidates agreed.
