Anura Kumara to be the JVP presidential candidate

Leader of the JVP Anura Kumara Dissanayake would be appointed as the party’s presidential candidate, JVP sources said.

It is further revealed that a majority of proposals received by the party favours the appointment of the party leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the most suitable to be nominated as the presidential candidate.
Sources also revealed that at the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna national convention to be held on the 18th at Colombo Galle Face grounds his name would be proposed and approved.

It was earlier decided to put forward a reputable retiree from the government service as the JVP candidate, it appears that this decision has been changed.

The JVP put forward a candidate for the Presidential Elections first in 1982 and their late Leader Rohana Wijeweera was the candidate. Thereafter, in 1999 Nandana Goonathilleke a member of the JVP Polit Bureau came forward as the party’s nominee. Goonathilleke obtained a total of 344,173 votes at the poll.
