The Anidda newspaper had reported that Sajith Premadasa is scheduled to announce his presidential plans at the unveiling of the Anuradhapura Sri Swarna Jayanthi Viharaya Cheithya under the ‘Sasunata Aruna’ programme.
This ceremony will be held under the patronage of the Asgiri Mahanayaka Thera with a large gathering of Bhikkus’ participation.
President has given his word
Meanwhile, President Maithripala Sirisena had indicated at the Cabinet meeting that he would not contest the next Presidential race and hinting indirectly to make Sajith the next UNP leader.
He had also stated that if there is a change in the UNP leadership, he and his party would support him.
It was further revealed that there had been a very close transaction recently between the President and Sajith, while a group of prominent UNP members have also pledged their backing for Sajith.
