According to the Met Department, the recorded temperature was 4.6 degrees Celsius.
This is a 5 degree Celsius drop from the usual temperature in the district. The lowest temperature was recorded in the district in 1914, which was -3.7.
The Met Department stated that dry weather would prevail in many parts of the country and cold weather could be experienced for the next 7 days.
However, according to Meteorologist Janaka Kumara, the morning cold weather condition would reduce from January 23rd.
He said that light showers could be experienced in the Southern and Sabaragamuwa provinces after January 24th.
Kumara said that due to the absence of clouds and winds blowing through the Indian sub-continent the country had experienced this cold weather.
The cold weather conditions could be experienced in the Eastern province, Hambantota, Monaragala and several other districts and winds of around 40 kmph would also prevail.
In addition, ground frost could be experienced in certain places in the Nuwara Eliya district today.
The highest temperature was recorded from Hambantota during the past 24 hours, ending at 8.30 am yesterday, which was 33.2 degrees Celsius. It is a 03 degree increase from the normal temperature in the area.
However, the temperature in Badulla, Ratnapura areas had dropped by 3 degrees while the temperature in Galle, Katugastota and Puttalam had dropped by 2 degrees.
