Intelligence services have received information about Buddhist monks, who were behind the attacks on Muslim-owned shops, a senior police official told Sri Lanka Mirror.
Details about them came to light in the course of investigations into the violent protest against Rohingya Muslim refugees from
Myanmar at Mt. Lavinia, he said.
One of the monks identified is the chief incumbent of a nearby temple in an attack on a Muslim businessplace at Pepiliyana, Nugegoda.
Considered a closest supporter of ex-defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, this monk has planned several conspiracies against the government, according to the senior police official.
Intelligence services also found evidence that Galagodaatte Gnanasara, Medagoda Abhayatissa, Akmeemana Dayaratana and Ittekande Saddhatissa Theras had planned violence against Muslims, he said.
However, the general secretary of Bodu Bala Sena, Gnanasara Thera has told ‘Sri Lanka Guardian’ that after coming to understand that his group had given some bad precedence, it was now making plans for a new journey by uniting all communities.
Dayaratana Thera remanded
Meanwhile, Sihala Ravaya president, Dayaratana Thera and another suspect have been remanded until October 09 over the protest at Mt. Lavinia.
After being questioned for nearly four hours by the CCD last morning, they were arrested and produced before the Mt. Lavinia magistrate.
In all, 10 persons, including a woman, are in remand custody over threatening the Myanmar refugees and other charges.
