Indian fisherman protest against arrests made by SL Navy

Several fishermen in the Tamil-Nadu region have gone on strike today, (9) requesting Indian authoritative bodies to facilitate the release of the 49 Indian fisherman and 12 vessels from Sri Lankan custody.

Indian sources confirm fishermen of the Ramanathanpuram district are on strike in protest of recent events.

The Sri Lanka Navy took 49 Indian fishermen and 12 fishing vessels into custody for conducting
illegal activities in Sri Lankan waters.

The Indian fishermen on protest have stated they are unable to maintain their livelihood, due to the continuous arrests made by the Sri Lanka Navy.

It has been reported that the Chief Minister of the Tamil-Nadu province has submitted a written request to the Indian Prime Minister, to mediate the immediate release of the 64 fishermen and 125 fishing vessels that are currently in Sri Lankan custody.
