Cabinet approval for Rs. 25,000 minimum fine

Cabinet approval has been granted for the charging of a minimum fine of Rs. 25,000 for traffic offences.

The minimum fine will be effective for offences such as driving without a licence, driving under the influence of drugs, entering motor vehicles onto a railway track incautiously and driving
without a valid insurance cover, said Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Rajitha Senaratne.

In addition traffic offences such speeding, overtaking on the left, reckless driving and diving by an underage person are also offences with a minimum fine of Rs. 25,000 will be imposed.
