Sri Lanka’s January Tea Production Shows Modest 2.13% Growth

Sri Lanka’s tea production for January saw a slight uptick of 2.13% compared to the same period in 2023, totaling 18.73 million kilograms. In January 2023, production stood at 18.46 million kilograms.

According to provisional data from the Sri Lanka Tea Board, only the Medium Grown elevation experienced expansion, with crop output increasing by 6.37% year-on-year (YoY) to reach 2.5 million kilograms. 
    
However, all other elevations witnessed dampened growth. Production at the High elevation contracted by 1.2% YoY to 3.5 million kilograms, while the Low Growns contracted by 3.85% to 12.5 million kilograms.

Notably, green tea saw the steepest decline, with output dropping by 8.84% to 147,346 kilograms.

Comparing January 2024 production to January 2022, there was a notable decrease of 4.14 million kilograms, with production in 2022 standing at 22.87 million kilograms.
