Second stock of imported eggs to get clearance today

The second stock of imported eggs is expected to get clearance to be released from the port today (April 08), the State Trade Corporation (STC) says.

The consignment will be cleared after the Animal Production & Health Department hands over the relevant analysis reports on the egg samples today, according to STC chairman Asiri Walisundara.

The second stock of one million eggs imported from India reached the island on March 29, followed by the arrival of the long-awaited first shipment carrying 2 million eggs on March 23.

Meanwhile, the Animal Production & Health Department will obtain samples today from the third shipment of imported eggs which reached the island on April 04.

The president of Bakery Owners’ Association N.K. Jayawardena alleged that only a meager number of bakeries are receiving the imported eggs.

Against this backdrop, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) officers are carrying on their raids in search of vendors selling eggs at higher prices.
