Cabinet nods for electricity rate hike in January and June

The cabinet has approved to increase electricity tariff once again this occasion in two steps in January and June next year.

Electricity Board representatives have told the Parliamentary Sub-Committee for Economic Stabilization that electricity bills must increase by about 70% to cover the current loss of the board.

Mr. Rohan Seneviratne, Additional General Manager of the Electricity Board has said that although the electricity tariffs have been increased in the past, it is not enough to cover the losses of the Electricity Board, so the cabinet has now approved to increase the electricity tariffs in two steps in the months of January and June 2023.

He has further informed the National Assembly sub-committee that the proposals related to the increase in electricity tariffs approved by the Cabinet will be forwarded to the Public Utilities Commission for approval.

Meanwhile, in an announcement, the Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission, Mr. Janaka Ratnayake, says that the Public Utilities Commission has not yet considered an increase in the electricity bill.
