Driving licence charges increased after 2009

The charges for a new driving licence has been raised to Rs.2,500 under normal service and Rs.3,500 under the one day service for one class of vehicles, while the charge for renewal of driving licence has been increased to Rs.2,800 under normal service and Rs. 4,000 under same-day service. Compared to the previous charge of Rs.1,700 for a new driving licence, the increase is about Rs.800.
The last revision of the levies was in 2009. Transport and Highways Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardena, in a Gazette Notification on Monday, announced the revised levies for the issuance of driving licences. If one is applying for two or more classes of vehicles at the same time, another Rs.500 will be added for each. A pair of large ‘L-Plates’ will be Rs.1,000 and a pair of small L-Plates will be Rs.500. The new charge to issue a duplicate of a driving licence for a lost one will be Rs.7,800 under normal service and Rs 9,000 under one-day service.

The Motor Traffic Department will charge Rs.3,300 under normal service and Rs.4,500 under same-day service to change the particulars of a driving licence. Conversion of the existing driving licence into new driving licence costs Rs.2,800 under normal service and Rs 4,000 under the same-day service.

The levy to issue a driving licence to a foreign citizen is Rs.25,000 under normal service and Rs.30,000 under same-day service. A visitor’s temporary licence for a period of one month can be obtained at Rs.2,000. Conversion of a foreign driving licence into a new driving licence, in respect of a Sri Lankan citizen, is Rs.3,300 and Rs.4,500 under normal and same-day services, respectively. Conversion of a foreign driving licence into a new driving licence, in respect of a foreign citizen, is Rs.15,000 and Rs 20,000 under normal and same-day services, respectively.
