New leader appointed for Communist Party

Dr J. Weerasinghe has been appointed as the leader of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka.

In a statement, the party said that Weerasinghe will serve as general secretary, a position equivalent to the post of leader.

The new appointment comes in the wake of the former minister - D.E.W Gunasekara’s resignation from the position.

Gunasekara had nominated Dr Weerasinghe to the post, which was unanimously approved by the party’s Working Committee.
