Election Commissioner’s debt stranded due to supplementary estimate blockage

The government has to pay Rs. 1,188 million to the Election Commission for the 2016 Presidential election and an advance for the upcoming General Election, according to government sources.

Measures have been taken to release a portion of this payment and the balance was planned to be paid through the supplementary estimate presented to parliament last week.

It is reported that in addition to the estimated expenses for the past presidential election, an additional Rs. 400 million had been spent. Further, in order to cover this payment and other state expenses, the government requires financial provisions.

Once parliament is dissolved, the power to allocate funds for expenses falls within the powers of the president and it is believed that these debts would be covered through the president’s powers.
