PM approves summoning Dappula before Speaker

It has been decided to summon Attorney General Dappula de Livera before the Speaker regarding his orders to the police to arrest High Court Judge Gihan Pilapitiya.

The Media Director of parliament issuing a statement said this decision had been taken at the Constitutional Council last Friday.                                

At this meeting it was discussed that due to this order issued by the AG the trust between the public and the judiciary has been tarnished.

It was also discussed that due to such orders, the independence of the judiciary and the professional integrity of the legal profession is affected.

The Constitutional Council also discussed the orders issued by the AG for the arrest of MPs and the arrest of the former IGP and Defence Secretary.

The Constitutional Council met last Friday under the patronage of Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, former Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan, Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, MP Thalatha Athukorale and Civil Organisation representatives Attorney Jawood Yusuf and N. Selvakumaran were among those who participated.
