President proposes to bring all citizen data under one centre

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has focused his attention on gathering personal information of all citizens for the purpose of  National Identity Cards, driving licenses, immigration and emigration documents, registration of births and deaths etc under one data collection centre, it is reported.

The President said during a discussion with the officials of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (30) that this process would reduce the time, effort and money spent on such services currently.

The current system is that all such data is collected at several institutions separately.

If this system can be brought under one umbrella organization, it will greatly reduce delays and ensure efficiency, the President pointed out.

President also said this will prevent the circulation of erroneous and duplicitous information, the President noted.

The President’s attention  was also drawn to assigning some of the projects currently under the purview of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology to the ministries or institutions which are directly responsible for the outcome of the program.

The case of handing over the school computer labs project to the Ministry of Education was cited as an example.

Minister Bandula Gunawardene, State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene, secretaries to the ministries Chulananda Perera, Professor Sunanda Madduma Bandara and several other officials were present at the discussion.

This proposal was brought at the time the current president was the Defence Secretary, but it was opposed by the civil organisations and the opposition.
