Constitutional Council to meet today!

The Constitutional Council is scheduled to meet today under the leadership of Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.

The Constitutional Council comprising 10 members will be officially appointed as per the provisions of the 19thAmendment.


According to parliamentary sources, as Mahinda Rajapaksa has taken oath as the Prime Minister, he can participate in today’s Constitutional Council meeting.

However, media reports suggest that Sajith Premadasa who has been nominated as the Opposition Leader had not been notified of the Constitutional Council meeting.

This is due to him not been officially announced as the Opposition Leader when parliament meets.

Accordingly, the Constitutional Council is scheduled to meet today sans the Opposition Leader.

Apart from that, the MPs who represented the Constitutional Council and other Civil Organization members have been notified in writing to participate in today’s Constitutional Council meeting.

Sajith two day Opposition Leader?

Meanwhile, there is talk that Sajith Premadasa who has been nominated as the Opposition Leader would only be able to participate in two parliamentary sessions during his term as the Opposition Leader.

President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa prorogued parliament and the new parliament session will be held on January 03, 2020. The President will make his throne speech and the Opposition Leader would be named on this date.

After the President’s throne speech, parliament is expected to be adjourned for around two months.

In such an event parliament is expected to meet again in March, after which the President has the power to dissolve parliament.
