At a time when the majority of SLFP organizers had stated never to support the SLPP candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, but the Central Committee had decided to support Gotabhaya’s candidacy to protect their privileges and positions. However, President Maithripala Sirisena had decided to stand independent during the presidential election period and had stepped down temporarily from his post as the Chairman of the SLFP and handed it over to Prof. Rohana Lakshman.
The Acting Chairman however stated that after the presidential election, Sirisena would take on the task of carrying out the future activities of the party.
He also noted that Sirisena would carry out the future activities of the SLFP from the party headquarters.
