Hakeem, Rishad to contest general elections separately

At the upcoming general elections, Rauff Hakeem’s Muslim Congress party and Rishad Bathiudeen’s All Ceylon People’s Congress will be contesting separately under the UNP, it is reported.

A spokesman of the Muslim Congress had told the ‘Ravaya’ newspaper that this decision had been taken during a meeting of the party seniors.

He noted that as the UNP had lost its Sinhala Buddhist vote base, they too would agree with this decision.

Meanwhile, it is also reported that the Tamil Progressive Front under the leadership of Mano Ganesan and Palani Digambaram are also planning on contesting separately.

As the smaller parties are of the view that allowing the two main parties to win the general election independently would be detrimental to the interest of the minority communities , they have arrived at this decision.
