Civic rights suspended if election laws are violated

The Election Commission will take stern measures according to the election Act against any politician or supporters who violate the laws and behave in an unruly or violent manner during the presidential election season, it is reported.


The Election Commission will meet during the next few days and take a decision in this regard, while a special unit has been established to deal with election violations.

If any person is subjected to punishment for violation of the Election Act they could lose their voting rights and other civic rights, the Election Commission warns. The Elections Commission has is also in the process of empowering the Assistant Elections Commissioners and Justice of Peace in order to enable them to take legal action against those who violate the election laws and behave violently, a senior Election Commission official said.
