Angampora to become a legitimate form of martial art

The form of martial arts Angampora which was banned all this time, has received unanimous Cabinet approval led by the President and Prime Minister to make it a legitimate form or martial art, said Housing, Construction and Cultural Affairs Minister Sajith Premadasa.

He said this during a media briefing held at the Ministry Headquarters yesterday (06).
He said, “The Angampora form of martial arts was a huge advantage to the military leaders during the Uwa Wellassa Rebellion. However, the imperialists had banned this form of martial art. However, the Cabinet, headed by the President and Prime Minister has unanimously decided to lift this ban and make Angampora legitimate.”

“Those involved in the Uwa Wellassa rebellion headed by Keppetipola, were labelled as traitors until recently. However, under the leadership of the President, they have not been identified as patriots. We have reached a decision to not only lift the ban on Angampora and legalise it, but we will also take steps to promote and preserve this ancient form of martial arts,” he said.
