With the number of illegal settlers and land grabbing in the lagoon areas of Arugambay in Ampara District on the rise, it has been decided to select the area as a tourist zone.
The Fisheries department is to mark out areas on this regard, says Add. Director of Fisheries in the Kalmunai District - Prabhath Wickramarachchi.
A sum of Rs. 11.7 million has been invested in this project aimed to safeguard fish in 20 odd lagoons in the area, prevent mangroves and their ecosystems from coming to harm, he said.
In addition, 1086 concrete poles have been made to mark out the areas, he added.
Stage 1 of the project will see to the marking out of lagoon areas in the Arugambay tourism zone. The next stages will aim at marking out all other lagoon areas in the district, he further said.
