Your appointment is illegitimate, Sampanthan tells Mahinda (video)

Opposition leader R. Sampanthan met Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (30) and told him that his appointment by the president as the prime minister was illegitimate, unconstitutional and anti-democratic.

Refusing to meet him at the PM’s office, Sampanthan met
Rajapaksa at his official residence for the former president at Wijerama Mawatha in Colombo, according to

Speaking at the conclusion of a party leaders’ meeting convened by the speaker, TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran said Sampanthan had met Rajapaksa only in the capacity of a MP.

Rajapaksa had wanted to meet the opposition leader to discuss obtaining support of the 16 TNA MPs.

Sumanthiran rejected reports that the position of the opposition leader had come under discussion there.

A warning

He warned the president’s actions with regard to the premiership would be considered when the TNA used its votes once parliament was convened.

Sumanthiran argued that the illegitimate nature of Rajapaksa’s appointment was apparent when no foreign head of state congratulated him on his appointment.
