Members who had allegations can't be in COPE: Mahindananda

Joint Opposition MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage yesterday alleged that the Committee On Public Enterprises (COPE) members who had allegations of engaging in telephone conversations with Perpetual Treasuries Limited (PTL) owner Arjun Aloysius during the Central Bank bond scam investigations, had been reappointed
despite pleas not to do so.

He told parliament that they had requested the Speaker not to reappoint such members as their allegations had been proved before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) into the bond scam.

"We have made a complaint against them in the bribery commission and an investigation is underway," he said.

JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said it was unethical to reappoint those members with allegations to the COPE and added that members free of fraud and corruption charges should be appointed to the COPE.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said he took up the matter in the party leaders meeting and that the government informed him that it was not hoping to remove them as their allegations had not been proved. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
