Accusations against attorney general at UNP WC meeting

Deputy ministers and backbenchers of the UNP have raised with prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe the delay in filing court action with regard to FCID and CID investigations into incidents of fraud and corruption.

The FCID has concluded probing 92 cases and the CID 25 cases,
but the attorney general has so far filed action over only 13 of them.

The matter came up at the UNP working committee meeting at Sirikotha yesterday (15).

A proposal to report to the WC about the progress of investigations and filing of cases on a monthly basis was unanimously adopted on the occasion.

Wijedasa too, accused

Ex-justice minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe was accused of delaying the course of the law against persons responsible for fraud, corruption and other crimes.

Noting that the high court takes at least 10 years to conclude a case due to the AG’s Dept. not having enough advocates, PM Wickremesinghe said the present staff of 118 would be raised by 100 by January and their salary doubled.

He said the UNP wanted to see wrongdoers brought before the law and the cases concluded speedily.

Three new high courts

Another proposal unanimously adopted at the party WC meeting will see three high courts newly set up and three judges each appointed to them.

Also, proposals to amend laws to enable directly appealing to the supreme court over high court rulings and to set up a prosecution unit accountable to the AG were adopted unanimously.
