State hospitals too, to have IVF facilities

State run hospitals will start providing in vitro fertilization facilities for couples, the health ministry has decided.

The first to be equipped with IVF facilities will be the maternity
hospital at Castle Street, for which minister Rajitha Senaratne has submitted a cabinet paper.

At present, only private hospitals have IVF facilities.

Family Health Bureau’s director Priyangani Senadhira said the facilities would be provided to hospitals at provincial level.

This will help the country to retain considerable foreign exchange spent on obtaining overseas treatment for fertility problems, she said.
