Team returns empty-handed without Udayanga

A two-member government team returned empty handed from Dubai where they tried unsuccessfully to secure the arrest of former ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga.

Additional solicitor general Yasantha Kodagoda and FCID director
SSP P.K.D. Priyantha had however gone there armed with a red warrant issued by Interpol.

Weeratunga is wanted in connection with an investigation into the purchase of MiG aircraft for the Air Force in 2006.

The Colombo Fort magistrate has issued a warrant for his arrest.

Kodagoda and Priyantha had discussions with senior officials of the UAE attorney general’s department and the police, who said they were unaware of the suspect’s whereabouts.

The two officials have gone to an address said to belong to him, but failed to trace him.

They were the second team to have gone to Dubai following the arrest of Weeratunga, who had been released after questioning.

The first team of seven officials had had their trip delayed three times, due to visa and flight booking problems.

A member of that team representing the foreign ministry had returned prematurely without informing the others, fearing for the safety of his wife after receiving threatening telephone calls.
