Parliament cannot be dissolved until 2020

It is constitutionally impossible to dissolve parliament and call for a general election contrary to what the SLPP wants done, political analysts point out.

The constitution says that that could be done only after four and a
half years elapse from the first meeting of a new parliament.

Or else, a two-third majority of MPs (150 MPs) should ask the president in writing to dissolve parliament.

That too, is unlikely as, in present parliament, the UNP has 106 seats, followed by 95 for the UPFA, 16 for the TNA, six for the JVP, and SLMC and EPDP one each.

Therefore, such an eventuality is possible only after 02 March 2020.

A political analyst questions if those who make calls to the contrary actually knew the constitutional provisions or were just misleading the people for their temporary satisfaction.
