Lankans victimized by social media racket

Several Sri Lankans have fallen victim to an international racket of financial fraud being carried out through social media, says Customs Department media spokesman Sunil Jayaratne.

He has told ‘Resa’ that these people had been told to pay the customs clearance money for prizes they had won in draws carried
out by foreign companies owning popular commercial brands.

The kingpin of the racket is said to be a British man identified as John Harry.

In one of the most recent incidents, Jayaratne said, a Sri Lankan housemaid in Kuwait had lost Rs. 450,000 to the racketeers.

He urged the people not to fall victim to this racket.
