An attempt was made by the Joint Opposition Secretary and letters were sent to SLFP members within the government to attend a joint
meeting between both factions of the SLFP. However although the matter was also discussed at length at the meeting held last Tuesday by the Joint Opposition SLFP members, the SLFPers in the JO have said the Secretary’s proposal could be considered only if the SLFP members within the government leaves the Unity government.
It was decided at this meeting that if the SLFP members fail to leave the government, they should not attempt to attend the meeting and reunite the SLFP.
It was the opinion of many of the JO SLFP members that this attempt to unite the SLFP was nothing but a political gimmick.
When we contacted several senior SLFP members of the JO, they said they had so far not received such an invitation.
