President to announce Wijedasa’s fate today

President Maithripala Sirisena is due to announce today (23) his response to a request by prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to remove UNP MP Wijedasa Rajapakshe from his justice and Buddha Sasana portfolio for having acted against government policies, say political sources.

Rajitha Senaratne will be making a special statement in that regard
at this afternoon’s cabinet media briefing that will be telecast live.

Article 46 b of the constitution empowers the president to appoint or remove a minister, state minister or a deputy minister upon recommendation by the prime minister.

Buddhist monks to meet

Meanwhile, Buddhist monks of the three chapters will meet today to discuss action against the UNP’s decision to remove Rajapakshe from his positions.

Chief incumbent of Naga Vihara in Jaffna Ven. Diyamilagaswewa Ariyakitti Thera said the country and Buddhist needed the continuous service of the minister.

He declined to say where the meeting would take place, but said an announcement would be made following their discussion.

Absent at cabinet meeting

Minister Rajapakshe was absent at yesterday’s cabinet meeting, and the ministers did not discuss him either.

The meeting lasted around one-and-a-half-hours and several cabinet papers were taken up only.
