Cricket debacle: JO calls for Thilanga to step down

The joint opposition yesterday suggested that President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Thilanga Sumathipala should at least temporarily resign from his post in order to rescue cricket from its present state.

Joint opposition member MP Shehan Semasinghe told a news conference that even former skipper Arjuna Ranatunga had urged
the authorities to conduct an independent investigation into what was taking place at the SLC.

“Mr. Ranatunga said that the International Cricket Council (ICC) should investigate Mr. Sumathipala over his alleged gambling links and the conduct of affairs at the cricket board,” he said.

He said that the government had not responded to the suggestion made by Mr. Ranatunga despite the fact that he was more than qualified to speak about the subject of cricket. He also said the government should find a solution to what ails cricket in Sri Lanka immediately.

He pointed out that it was mandatory to avoid political interference in the SLC.

“Mr. Sumathipala should be asked to answer for what is taking place with regards to the game of cricket at the moment and he has to resign from his post in order that an inquiry could be held,” he added.

He also said that the cricketers were not the ones to blame for the state of cricket in this country.

Meanwhile, he said that the young parliamentarians in the joint opposition were of the view that a special debate should take place on the cricket issue in Parliament next week. (Kalathma Jayawardhane)
