A statement issued by the party today stated that the leaders of the
TNA’s constituent parties convened a meeting last evening to discuss the actions taken by President Maithripala Sirisena after the end of the parliamentary session on October 26.
It said that the three important decisions were taken during the meeting.
According to the Constitution of Sri Lanka, the President does not have the power to remove the current Prime Minister of the country while the powers to do so, which had existed before the introduction of the 19th Amendment of the Constitution, were abolished by the 19th amendment, the release said.
Hence the Gazette notifications issued by the President to remove the Prime Minister and appoint a new Prime Minister are unconstitutional and illegal, the TNA says.
The TNA condemned the “undemocratic” decision taken to prorogue the Parliament following this process.
The decision to prorogue the Parliament was taken in order to show parliamentary majority by using this time period to bribe MPs with ministerial portfolios and money, due to the appointing of a Prime Minister who does not command the support of the majority of the Parliament, the TNA charged.
The TNA said it condemns and opposes these undemocratic actions.
The party also said that one of its Parliamentarians, S. Viyalendiran, has also been caught in this conspiracy.
Viyalendiran was sworn in as Deputy Minister of Regional Development (Eastern Development) last evening. The Batticaloa District MP is the first MP to defect from the TNA.
Expressing its objections to this, the TNA said that actions would be taken against MP Viyalendiran.
Due to the aforementioned reasons, the TNA had decided to support a motion of no confidence against the government headed by Mahinda Rajapaksa, who it says has been appointed as Prime Minister unconstitutionally and illegally.
The TNA says that it believes that taking a neutral stance in this situation would lead to a state of anarchy and promote undemocratic paths to victory.
