Trouble is over if Karu is made PM – SLFP minister

The stalemate in the government will be over if incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe agrees to appoint speaker Karu Jayasuriya as the prime minister, according to a SLFP minister.

The minister told Sri Lanka Mirror that his party found no issues in the continuation of the present government.

A website run by an official of the presidents’ office reports that
more than 40 UNP ministers and MPs are at talks at party general secretary Kabir Hashim’s home on appointing Jayasuriya as the PM.

They say that the power of government obtained after many years of suffering cannot be allowed to be lost due to Wickremesinghe’s hunger for power.

Noting that they cannot face the supporters, they stress that they should tactically allow the president’s wish, make Karu the PM and ensure continuation of the government.

Suggestions sent through Sajith rejected

However, after coming to know this, Wickremesinghe has sent them a message through deputy leader Sajith Premadasa that he would agree to give Karu the party chairmanship and two powerful ministries.

He has also informed them that Imitiaz Bakeer Marker should be the general secretary, while Premadasa should continue as the deputy leader.

However, they refused to accept the suggestions.

According to them, Wickremesinghe is incapable of making an organized challenge to the SLFP, led by the president.

Hashim too, has agreed with them.

Range Banda sends resignation letter

That same website says Palitha Range Bandara has sent a letter to Hashim, saying that he would resign from his portfolio if Wickremesinghe did not step down.

When Hashim refused to accept the letter, Bandara has told him that he would function as an independent MP.
