President suspends PM’s tab programme

The cabinet has decided, on a presidential request, to suspend a programme to provide tabs for GCE advanced level students and teachers, which would have cost Rs. four billion.

The ministers who met last week gave approval for the programme suggested by prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, but at their
meeting yesterday (20), they agreed with president Maithripala Sirisena’s opinion that the money should be used for a more productive purpose.

President stops Rs. 4 billion tab programme

The cabinet had already chosen a supplier to supply the tabs, each costing Rs. 27,000, to 159,078 students and 36,070 teachers.

A minister has told BBC Sandeshaya that a majority of UNP ministers agreed with the president’s decision that technical programmes such as tabs and wi-fi were not among the basic needs of the people, as shown by them through the result of the recent mini-polls.

Most of the SLFP ministers too, attended the meeting today, excepting Dayasiri Jayasekara and Susil Premajayantha who had been demanding the ouster of prime minister Wickremesinghe.
