Treasury Bond Commission Given Six week extension!

Although, Treasury Bond Commissions given has completed the recording of information, the president has decided to extend its term by six weeks in order to prepare the report according to reliable sources

The commission’s term was schedule to end by October 27.

President Sirisena appointed the Commission to investigate the bond issuance between February 01, 2015 to March 31, 2016, in February 2017.

However, the Commission’s term was extended by thee months each on two instances.

The recording of evidence was carried out for almost nine months.

But, the report of the Commission is currently being prepared to be handed over to the President, while the Attorney General is in the process of making arrangements to file charges in Court based on the findings and recommendations of the Commission.

What next?

No legal provision to determine punishment

The former Commissioner of the Human Rights Council Prathibha Mahanamahewa meanwhile said the Commission has no power to determine punishment.

He said if based on the investigations certain persons are found to have flouted the law and they have been identified, then the Attorney General has to file charges against such persons in a Court of law.

Accordingly, the President should handover the report to the AG in order to carry out his duty, said Mahanamahewa.
