Due to a tense situation erupting in the Southern Provincial
Council during the session today the mace was damaged, it was reported.
The situation turned violent when the Southern Provincial Council Chief Minister made a request to postpone the bill until September 12.
At that point the SPC – UNP – MP Chandana Priyantha had attempted to take the mace out of the chamber when a group of Joint Opposition MP’s had chased after him and in the resulting fist fight the mace had broken into four pieces.
Later four MPs had gathered the pieces of the mace and put it together and placed it back in the chamber.
