Deadline for Wijedasa ends at 6.30 pm today

The period given to minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe by the UNP working committee to settle a dispute in connection with his having violated the collective responsibility of the cabinet ends at 6.30 pm today (21).

The prime minister instructed him to correct himself over a remark
he has reportedly made that he would look back only after taking back the Hambantota port.

Rajapakshe told the party WC on August 17 that he had not said so.

The PM has advised him that he could no longer remain in his ministerial position and that it would be better to go for an alternative in consultation with the president.

He is yet to respond to the PM’s instruction, a senior minister said.

He should resign

The UNP parliamentary group will meet at Temple Trees at 6.30 pm today to take a decision regarding the justice minister.

They say the UNP WC and they themselves have no faith in Rajapakshe, and that they have unanimously decided that he should relinquish his ministerial position.

However, at a function in Anuradhapura on August 19, he strongly criticized the government and insisted that he would not resign.
